New MKMapKit APIs for iPhone SDK 4.0

May 1, 2010

Looking through the documentation for the iPhone SDK 4.0 today, I discovered that we as developers will be able to add not only pins to our map views, but also overlays. Yes, overlays! This is just like what the actual GMaps Javascript API allows you to do.

“Overlay” is a broad term, for it includes circles, polygons, and various shapes. Just as an example, you can specify the center coordinate of a circle, and specify the radius, and you will have yourself a nice circle overlay on the map! It’s all wrapped up in a very simple and easy-to-use group of functions with MapKit.

For the reason of having these new APIs, I am looking forward even more to this summer for the release of the iPhone 4G.
